The FX board was fractured today. USD/CNY reached 6.6847, with the yuan softening against the dollar, while USD/JPY at 157.68 and USD/KRW at 1340.0 showed both the yen and the won appreciating versus the dollar. Yuan weak on one side, neighboring Asian currencies firm on the other — exactly the configuration that hurts a transshipment desk.
Why it hurts: most SNSUC transshipment cargoes are sourced in dollars, yet settlement and downstream collection often land in CNY, JPY or KRW accounts. A softer yuan makes dollar procurement more expensive in local terms, but if collection is in yen or won, those firmer currencies absorb part of the hit.
On the euro, EUR/USD at 1.1238 and EUR/CNY at 7.5073 keep the single currency strong against the yuan. European refiner clients paying in euros receive more yuan on conversion, but the dollar-buying exposure on the sourcing side needs recomputation.
Operational note: stop locking landed cost to a static FX rate. Split the sourcing side (dollars) from the collection side (CNY/JPY/KRW/EUR) by currency and re-estimate net exposure daily. This week watch whether USD/CNY holds 6.69 — a break above forces an upward revision of every dollar-sourced yuan cost.
