The rubber chain diverged overnight. Natural rubber closed at 19,000 CNY/t, up just 0.34%, while butadiene rubber fell 1.96% to 15,985 CNY/t. The gap pushed the NR premium over BR to 3,015 CNY, wider than the prior window.

Butadiene drives the split. BR's cost is anchored to butadiene, and when marginal butadiene supply loosens, BR drops first. Natural rubber, by contrast, is paced by channel inventory and tire-maker pricing, and its decline lagged.

Tire makers face a concrete cost puzzle. Natural is expensive and synthetic is cheap, which in theory argues for raising the synthetic blend to cut cost, but premium tires depend on natural rubber's properties, so formulation switches hit a ceiling. The more practical play is two-way hedging: pair an NR long with a BR short on futures to capture the convergence swing.

On the physical side, a widening NR-BR premium pulls arbitrage flows into delivering natural rubber to exchange warehouses, which may further entrench the spot premium structure until butadiene maintenance returns and props BR back up.
