The rubber chain split today. Natural rubber settled at 19,030 yuan/t, down 1.07 yuan, while butadiene rubber closed at 16,370 yuan/t, up 0.21 yuan. The gap between the two (NR minus BR) widened from the earlier low near 2,105 yuan back to 2,660 yuan, putting natural rubber once again at a premium to butadiene.
A wider spread directly reshapes tire formulation economics. When natural rubber carries the larger share of the recipe, total feedstock cost tracks natural rubber; when natural rubber is relatively cheap (narrow spread), plants blend in more of it to cut cost. At a 2,660-yuan spread, butadiene rubber looks relatively cheaper, giving the formulation side a reason to tilt toward synthetic — while guarding against a later butadiene rebound that would erase the saving.
For the trading layer, pricing and hedging need to run on different clocks. Natural rubber is falling while butadiene is rising, so betting one direction is unstable. The common play is to price natural rubber to need and lock butadiene cost on the screen, managing volatility through the two-product spread rather than a single leg. With the yuan softer today, the dollar-denominated natural-rubber import book also needs re-conversion.
Downstream tire inventories have not visibly drawn down, and price pass-through is stuck at the provincial-distributor level. So for now the spread move mostly changes plants' formulation and procurement rhythm, not yet the end-user price.
