Long-term Impact of CBAM on China's Petrochemical Exports
We interpret the Phase-2 scope of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and quantify its potential cost impact on fertilizers, aluminium processing and downstream products.
The CBAM transitional period already requires importers to report embedded emissions; formal levies begin in 2027. Coal-based base petrochemicals carry substantially higher per-unit carbon cost than gas-based routes, compressing pricing power for EU-bound sales. We advise exporters to build product carbon-footprint ledgers early, explore green-power substitution and feedstock lightening, and lock carbon cost via medium-term contracts.
