Natural rubber's front-month contract settled at 20,095 yuan per tonne, up 5.54% on the day — the sharpest move across the complex tonight. Butadiene rubber followed, closing at 16,000 yuan per tonne, a 3.96% gain. The NR-BR spread blew out to 4,095 yuan per tonne, a gap rarely seen in recent sessions.
The rally has a physical cause. Heavy seasonal rains across southern Thailand disrupted tapping and inland haulage, while leaf-fall disease in Indonesia trimmed supply further. Bonded stocks at Qingdao have been drawing down steadily; with spot availability thin, tire makers taking on replacement barrels have little choice but to pay higher marks.
Rubber is not one of SNSUC's seven transshipment grades, but it sits at the cost center of downstream tire plants. A 4,000-plus yuan spread between NR and BR means the more natural rubber a compound uses, the harder the cost passes through. Tire makers now face a binary: lock a slice of long-term tonnage at these levels to protect deliveries, or buy options to cap spot procurement cost and wear the premium.
The yuan held at 6.705 against the dollar, virtually unchanged, so the stronger dollar cost of imported rubber was not hedged away by the exchange rate — the entire move landed on the delivered price. Until Thai rainfall and Indonesian disease ease, the NR premium structure should hold.
