Fuel oil closed at 5,418 yuan/tonne, up 2.13%. On the surface that is winter bunker restocking; underneath sits a structural shift - the HSFO-VLSFO spread is widening again. Low-sulphur compliant fuel carries a premium, high-sulphur is supported by scrubber-fitted demand, and the gap between them is exactly the scrubber fleet's savings space.

Rough math: a Capesize burning 3,000-4,000 tonnes of bunker per voyage saves $90k-$120k per trip for every $30/tonne the spread widens. When the spread compressed to $50-80, many owners judged the scrubber payback too slow; now that it is back above $100, the retrofit payback shortens again.

For SNSUC's bonded bunker business this means two things: first, at hubs like Zhoushan and Dalian, high-sulphur supply must be scheduled early, because scrubber vessels will detour slightly to lift cheaper fuel; second, on the VLSFO side, green methanol and LNG multi-fuel options squeeze pricing, so the quote no longer follows a pure crude logic and must track refuelling-port competition.

The risk is equally clear: if the wider spread is just restocking sentiment, it will fade once winter passes and compliant supply catches up, and the scrubber math resets. So the desk should not watch fuel oil in isolation - the HSFO-VLSFO spread deserves its own line on the screen.
